The Double-Edged Sword of Comparison
“Comparison is the most readily available self-destruct button we have today.” – Kristen Boss, Pivot to Purpose
Comparison can be destructive if we let it run wild. It fuels doubt, steals confidence, and convinces us we’re not enough. But comparison can also serve a different purpose. With the right perspective, it becomes a tool for learning, clarity, and inspiration.
Why We Compare Ourselves
If you’ve ever fallen down an internet rabbit hole—checking other websites, social feeds, or brand offers—you’re not alone. I’ve done it too, more often than I’d like to admit.
The truth is, most of us compare ourselves because we want to know: Am I good enough? Am I doing it right? Unfortunately, those questions usually lead to one conclusion—we come up short.
But comparison doesn’t have to end there.
Shifting Perspective: From Doubt to Discovery
When we stand firmly in who we are—our values, our unique perspective, our gifts—comparison loses its sting. We no longer feel diminished by what others are doing. Instead, we can be inspired.
Instead of asking, What are they doing better than me? Ask:
- How am I different?
- How do I genuinely want to work, serve, and create?
- What do I know to be true about my voice and my value?
This shift transforms comparison from a trap into a compass.
Comparison in Business: Strategic, Not Emotional
In business, some comparison is necessary. We call it competitive analysis. By studying what others are doing, you gain insight into your market, your strengths, and your unique space.
But beware: if you mimic your competition, you’ll blend into the noise. Playing it safe only creates sameness. True clarity comes when you embrace your difference and design a brand strategy that reflects your authentic self.
For example, in my own field of brand clarity, there are endless online courses and DIY templates. They serve their purpose, but they’re not my path. My strength is one-on-one collaboration—walking alongside women as they uncover their brand’s essence. That’s my distinction. That’s what I choose to amplify.
The Lessons of Comparison
Here’s what I’ve learned about comparison over the years:
- It has both positive and negative results.
- It can build us up or tear us down.
- Left unchecked, it can stall our growth.
- Used with clarity, it reveals our uniqueness, gifts, and power.
- On the dark side, it can breed self-conceit, which is just as damaging.
From Comparison to Confidence
When we’re confident in who we are, we can watch others without envy and instead draw inspiration.
“Spend more time creating than consuming others’ content and energize yourself with inspiration rather than comparison. Focus on the value you can add to others’ lives, and you’ll be amazed at the growth you will experience.” – Kristen Boss, Pivot to Purpose
Trust your voice. Trust your difference. Trust your path.
